Originating Registers

 
 

Originating Registers, or ORs, provided callers with dialtone and stored the dialed digits. 

DTMF receivers are adjunct electronic devices attached to ORs which were introduced in the 1960's and permitted Touchtone calling.

A busy exchange might have 20 to 30 originating registers shared across 10,000 subscribers, each used only for the duration of customer dialing.
